How to Cancel a Service Engagement

What happens to the money when you cancel — refund rules per engagement state, milestone state, and timesheet state.

    Step-by-step guide

    1. 1

      Where to cancel

Open the engagement under My Learning → My Resume / Interview / Job Support (or Service Engagements on the main dashboard). Look for the Cancel button in the engagement actions row. Both you and the instructor can cancel an active engagement.

    2. 2

      Before the instructor accepts

If status is 'Awaiting Instructor', cancelling simply withdraws the request — no money has moved yet, so nothing needs to refund.

    3. 3

      Multi-milestone fixed engagements

Funded-but-not-yet-approved milestones (status 'Funded' or 'Submitted') refund in full to your original card via Stripe. Approved/paid milestones stay settled — the instructor keeps their share and the deliverable is yours. Pending (never funded) milestones are simply cancelled with no money to refund.

    4. 4

      Single-payment fixed engagements

If you funded the full amount up front and haven't approved yet, the unreleased portion refunds to your original card. Any portion already released to the instructor through stage approvals stays with them.

    5. 5

      Hourly weekly engagements

Approved/paid weeks stay paid. Open weeks (no hours yet) and submitted-but-unapproved weeks won't be charged. There's no upfront escrow to refund on hourly — your card is only charged at each approval.

    6. 6

      Disputing a single stage instead

If just one milestone or week is the problem, you can dispute that specific item instead of cancelling the whole engagement. Open the milestone/week row and click Dispute — Tutrx support reviews the case and decides the outcome.
